Motivation and what kills it

'Control leads to compliance; autonomy leads to engagement.' Daniel H Pink

Most people I talk to are hugely motivated to give their best at work - it's what makes us happy, it's how we are successful and it's how work is a place to flourish and grow.

The thing about motivation though is, that there are a few things leaders do that kill motivation on the spot.

For every leader, it's worth exploring what behaviour of ours might take the wind out of our teams sails:

⬇ Lack of appreciation of our team members input and skills, their diversity of thought

⬇ Micromanagement instead of trust

⬇ Lack of opportunity to grow

⬇ Lack of real collaboration

⬇ Poor listening culture

⬇ Failures are not seen as a space to grow

⬇ Incorrect or unfair renumeration

In recent research about the impact of motivation, Gallup have found that a highly engaged workforce brings companies 23% more profitability. They also found that engaging employees well leads to 43% less turnover and 81% less absenteeism - we all know how difficult and costly recruitment is today, so this is a big deal.

Korn Ferry found that boredome is the main reason for one in three professionals quitting their jobs! So, making sure our teams are motivated, appreciated and stretched towards growth is huge!

A coaching environment is a great way to safely and privately reflect on how you might be able to improve your team members' motivation. If you would like to explore this possibility, I'd be delighted to meet you (online) for a FREE session in which you can get to know me and see how I would support you.
